Reflexology

Reflexology is a form of bodywork that focuses primarily on your feet and hands by applying a point pressure massage to stimulate nerve endings on the sole of your feet.

Reflexology is an ancient practice, its history and origin is difficult to track. However, reflexology is thought to have been passed down through an oral tradition, and possibly first recorded as a pictograph on the Egyptian tomb of Ankhamor in 2330 BC along with other medical procedures.

Reflexology works on the principle that certain points on the feet correspond to certain organs and body parts and that applying pressure to those areas can promote health and reduce inflammation process in the corresponding organs.

Theory of reflexology

It is believed that foot reflexology works comparable to acupuncture and shiatsu: by bringing balance to the flow of energy along the body's meridians.

The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are "reflex" areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body.

The right foot and hand represent the right side of the body, while the left foot and hand represent the left side, according to ‘zone therapy’.

For example:

•the tips of the toes reflect the head

•the heart and chest are around the ball of the foot

•the liver, pancreas and kidney are in the arch of the foot

•low back and intestines are towards the heel

Practitioners believe that applying pressure to these reflex areas can promote health in the corresponding organs through energetic pathways.

Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, an ear, nose, and throat doctor, introduced his concept of "zone therapy" in 1915.

American physiotherapist Eunice Ingram further developed this zone theory in the 1930's into what is now knows as reflexology.

The point pressure massage may send signals that balance the nervous system or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce pain, discomfort and stress.

How does it feel?

Most people find reflexology to be very enjoyable and relaxing, from a small child to an adult.

Reasons to have reflexology

•Asthma, Sinusitis

•Stress and stress-related conditions

•Migraine headaches

•Insomnia ,high blood pressure

•Hormonal imbalances

•Sports injuries

•Menstrual disorders, PMS

•Digestive problems, such as constipation

•General aches and pains in the neck, back and shoulder

Reflexology is a very popular alternative therapy. It promotes relaxation for your mind and body, improves circulation, reduces pain, soothes tired feet, and encourages overall healing.

Reflexology is widely used for post-operative or palliative care. A study in the American Cancer Society journal found that one-third of cancer patients used reflexology as a complementary therapy.

Reflexology only recommended as a complementary therapy and should never replace medical treatment.

What is a reflexology treatment like?

A session of reflexology treatment usually is about 30 to 60 minutes long and begins with a consultation about your health and lifestyle.

You are then asked to remove your shoes and socks and sit comfortably in a reclining chair. There is no need to take your clothes off, you remain fully dressed. After brief assessment of your feet and wiping them with warm towel, reflexologist will gently stimulate some parts of your feet to identify areas of concerns.

Reflexology can be done with lotion or oil. Most of the time its done just with talcum powder.

The reflexologist then uses brisk movements to warm the feet up. Then pressure is applied in thumb-and-finger "walking" patterns, resulting in gentle massaging of specific zones of the feet, taking in consideration your level of comfort.

How will I feel after?

Most people are relaxed and peaceful after a treatment. Some may even fall a sleep during a treatment, so of course they feel sleepy.

Occasionally, people get emotional for a brief moment, and is considered to be part of the healing process.

We always advise you not to rush after the treatment and take a few minutes to return to normal routine.

Herbal tea is offered after your treatment to help flash the toxins.
